Negotiations between the organizers of the Australian Open and the authorities of the state of Victoria must be completed within 24 hours. Reported by The Age.
In their course, a decision should be made on the timing of the tournament in 2021. In particular, there is a possibility that it will be postponed for a week, that is, it will not start on January 18, but on January 25. However, the ATP, WTA and the Australian tele-rights holder do not support this idea.
The possibility of canceling the qualification so that fewer players fly to Australia is also being discussed. Then, perhaps, the country’s authorities will allow them to arrive not in January, but in December.
In addition, the negotiations will touch upon the severity of the 14-day quarantine. If the organizers manage to achieve a soft quarantine, they will be able to hold preparatory tournaments before the Australian Open.
