Former promoter Fury isn’t surprised Wilder thwarted Joshua’s fight

Mick Hennessy, former promoter of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, is not surprised that the unification fight with Anthony Joshua fell through last week. Fury, who is currently partnered with promoters Frank Warren and Bob Arum, appeared to be on the verge of closing a deal with Joshua, who holds the IBF, WBA and WBO titles. There was even a date and place of their battle – August 14 in Saudi Arabia.

Deontay Wilder

The fight was disrupted last Monday when the arbitration ruled that Fury must abide by the terms of the contract and immediately give Deontay Wilder revenge. A rematch clause was included in their contract back in February 2020 when Fury stopped Wilder in the seventh round and won the WBC title.

Fury and Wilder have already signed contracts to meet for the third time, the current date and location is July 24 in Las Vegas.

According to Mick Hennessy, if he were still Fury’s promoter, he would have waited until the arbitration ended before getting involved in serious merger negotiations with Joshua.

“I was not surprised at all, because you have to understand that Deontay Wilder has very, very capable and extremely professional people like Shelley Finkel and Al Haymon, and although they did not participate in this whole circus, they were in the background. did their due diligence and did not chat, ”Hennessy told Sky Sports.

“They worked quietly in the background. And these are really skillful and very capable people, and I knew that something like this would happen, 100 percent. I knew this, so it didn’t surprise me in any way. Would I do something differently? Yes, 100 percent. No deals can be made while arbitration is in progress. It’s too presumptuous. This is madness. During this time, they could take part in other battles, especially Joshua. Joshua could work all this time, right? ” Hennessy added.
